Barend is a historian and an experienced guide. He is the initiator of De GidsenGids and he gives tours on the architecture and history of Amsterdam. In addition he works as a guide at Museum de Lakenhal in Leiden. After a Bachelor’s in history and a Master’s in Museum Studies at the University of Amsterdam, he worked in Museum Het Schip. A museum devoted to the art and architecture of the Amsterdam School movement.

As a curator, Barend has worked on various exhibitions, including the museum’s new permanent exhibition. He also guided many architecture walks and excursions organized by the museum. Researching and curating still occupies Barend, now self-employed. However, he has come to the conclusion that his preferred way of sharing knowledge is verbal . That is why he enjoys giving city walks as a guide and has founded The Guides Guide to further expand this form of knowledge transfer.

For Barend, one of the most fun parts of the work for The Guides Guide is  helping other guides in their development. He appreciates hearing  their various fascinating stories, and together they will think of new and better ways to share them. By continuously exploring, he keeps on learning.
